You couldn't make it up

Typical Sunday morning. Watched my son play rugby.

This afternoon is less typical. We are driving to rural Lincolnshire with a view to buying a puppy – an F1 American cockapoo.

It's a cross breed. The mum is an American cocker spaniel and the dad is a miniature poodle.

Incidentally, if you mate an F1 cockapoo to another F1 cockapoo you get an F2 (second generation) cockapoo, otherwise known as a cockapoo-poo.

I'm not making this up!

Pride of Britain hotelier supports smoking ban review

A leading hotelier says Antony Worrall Thompson is right to call for a review of the smoking ban.

Pride of Britain chief executive Peter Hancock says the smoking ban "has crucified pubs and clubs in all parts of Britain and continues to do so".

Full story here including the following soundbite from Caterer and Hotelkeeper's Neil Gerrard:

"The ban has undeniably contributed to the increased closure rate of pubs over the past five years."

Try telling ASH that!

The magazine's website also has one of those self-selecting online polls allowing you to vote 'yes' or 'no' when asked 'Should the Government review the smoking ban. When I voted a few minutes ago it was 50:50.

Harmless fun. Click here and scroll down.

Hold the front page!

Day three of the Independent's investigation ('Big Tobacco Exposed') is a bit of a damp squib.

Yesterday we were promised some earth shattering revelations – "How the industry used front organisations to gain access to research".

What we got (Smoke and mirrors: how the tobacco industry hides behind lobbyists) was the 'news' that three companies – legal firm Clifford Chance and PR companies Bell Pottinger and Hume Brophy – had submitted Freedom of Information requests without revealing that their clients were, respectively, Imperial Tobacco, Philip Morris and the National Federation of Retail Newsagents (NFRN).

Does this make Bell Pottinger, Hume Brophy and Clifford Chance front organisations for Big Tobacco? Er, no.

Is the NFRN, which receives a small amount of income from the tobacco industry (representing less than five per cent of its total income), a front organisation? No.

Was anyone misled into thinking that Bell Pottinger, Hume Brophy and Clifford Chance wanted the information exclusively for themselves? Only if you are entirely ignorant of the way that PR companies and law firms operate.

The only other revelation in today's Independent (circulation 176,681 and falling) was the information that "right-of-centre libertarian group" Big Brother Watch had also made an FoI request on a tobacco-related issue and that Alex Deane, a director of Bell Pottinger, is a former director of Big Brother Watch.

Does this make Big Brother Watch a front organisation for Big Tobacco? Hardly.

What it demonstrates is that BBW, like a growing number of think tanks and pressure groups, is so concerned by the creeping erosion of civil liberties (represented very clearly by the tobacco control movement) that it wants to do something about it.

If that makes BBW a front organisation for Big Tobacco then an awful lot of groups (and people) are going to be tarred with the same brush.

Some, however, are only too happy to promote the fiction that we're all pawns of a multi-million pound tobacco industry.

PS. I should add that it was announced yesterday that Dan Hamilton is leaving Big Brother Watch at the end of next week to join – Bell Pottinger!

Conspiracy theorists will have a field day. I'm surprised that ASH, and the Independent, didn't mention it. Perhaps that was a step too far, even for tobacco control and their fellow travellers.

Joe Jackson live and kicking

I value public displays of support even if, privately, there may be the occasional disagreement.

Joe Jackson doesn't agree with everything Forest says or does. On some issues he is perhaps our fiercest critic.

He is however incredibly discreet. He makes his point privately, not on Facebook or some other public forum. To the best of my knowledge he has never disclosed to anyone a private exchange of views and I respect him enormously for that.

Better still, his comments are always constructive. And when we disagree (usually on strategy), he never sulks or threatens to withdraw his support.

I mention this because one of the issues that Joe and I disagree on is smoking rooms. Actually, I don't disagree with his view that smoking rooms are anathema in comparison with a genuine choice of smoking and non-smoking pubs and bars.

I simply take the view that, as things currently stand in the UK, the option of separate, well-ventilated smoking rooms is the only policy that is likely to attract the support of a substantial number of politicians.

Despite his reservations, Joe has signed AWT's petition. He has also posted a link on his new website. Like the old one the new site includes a section devoted to smoking with links to several smoker-friendly blogs and websites.

These include Dick Puddlecote ("Very readable ‘anti-Anti’ blogger") and Velvet Glove Iron Fist which Joe describes as "one of the best sources for the debunking of current antismoking myths". No disagreement there.

The site also features information about what Joe calls his "best live album yet". Live Music was recorded on his 2010 European tour and you can buy it here, via Amazon or on iTunes.

Recommended.

Smoking ban review more popular than gay marriage proposal!

AWT's petition continues to attract support.

Earlier today signatures reached 2,000 and the petition is currently #4 in the Department of Health list and #44 in the overall list. (Update: make that #43. It's just overtaken 'Legalise Gay Marriage'!)

The initial burst of enthusiasm will inevitably subside but, as I keep saying, we're in this for the long haul.

Meanwhile, thanks to the following bloggers who have added their support in recent days:

Anonymong
Joshua Lachkovic's Blog
Mark Wadsworth

If there are any more you can add them in the comments. (See also last week's posts for other supportive blogs.)

I promise I won't write about the petition again – well, not for a week or two at least. We will however do another round of e-bulletins next week to hoover up anyone who has returned from holiday unaware of AWT's petition.

In Bruges

Just back from Bruges.

What a great place for a short break. Warmly recommended.

Number 52 with a bullet

Currently on a Eurostar train bound for Bruges.

I depart these shores with the 'news' that AWT's petition has attracted 1600 signatures to date and is now in the top 60.

Our target - the top 20 - is still some distance away but to put this in perspective there are already more than 5700 petitions on the Government website.

Furthermore, if you check out the Department of Health petitions, you will see that AWT's 'Review the Smoking Ban' is currently #6 (out of 266).

As you can see, this petition malarkey is quite addictive!
