Is there anybody there?

I have a speaking engagement tonight.

I have been asked to talk to a group of students. It was arranged several months ago and the subject is 'Civil liberties up in smoke'.

Unfortunately I find myself competing against The Brits - not a problem if you're my age but I can't imagine many students choosing me in preference to Adele, Jessie G (J?) or even James Corden.

Or am I being unduly pessimistic?

I wouldn't want to listen to James Corden after the way he swore at Patrick Stewart the actor at the last awards ceromony.

There was a time when no one would dream of using the F-word on television.
The problem is - I can't remember when that was.

I don't know how the evening went Simon, but I do think you were probably being somewhat pessimistic.

Remember just the other day you mentioned the 13 people, who took part in a so-called poll - they were "social smokers, aged between 19 and 25, who were recruited through the online social network Facebook and via posters in cafes, supermarkets, and on community noticeboards"

If these people could be coerced into taking part in that sort of drivel, then I am sure they wouldn't let the likes of "Adele, Jessie G (J?) or even James Corden" stop them from turning up to a "proper" debate - Would they? - Did they?

A bigger problem was the fact that we were competing with Shrove Tuesday (aka Pancake Day). Nevertheless quality is more important than quantity and a good time was had by all (I think). Afterwards, over a drink or two, we discussed a special event that, if it comes off, will make the journey and the overnight stay well worth while. Watch this space.
