The gloves are off
Back Vaping Beat Smoking is the name of a new campaign launched this week by the World Vapers’ Alliance.
The logo, which features a less than subtle boxing glove (beat smoking, geddit?), is the sort of thing you would expect anti-smoking campaigners to adopt.
Another campaign image (below) goes even further and has two men in a boxing ring. Spot the smoker.
Curiously the WVA is owned and funded by the Consumer Choice Center, a ‘consumer advocacy group supporting lifestyle freedom’ whose website insists it is ‘fighting for consumer choice’:
We have a clear stance that consumer choice is pivotal. This coherent fight for choice is why we receive support from many partners, members, and individuals.
Coherent? If you say so. But what about fighting for the freedom to smoke?
Launched in 2017 by Students For Liberty, the CCC says it is now independent of SfL. Instead ‘Our support comes from corporations, individuals, and foundations.’
Among their ‘many funders’ CCC is ‘proud’ to include the Wayland Group (Cannabis) and the Supreme Cannabis Company.
In other words, CCC is happy to fight for the right to vape and consume (smoke?) cannabis, but smoke tobacco? Apparently not.
We have to 'beat' smoking even though millions of adults enjoy smoking, know the risks, and don't want to quit.
So much for consumer choice.
