"Strong voice for classical liberalism" supported plain packaging
Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at 13:06
A leading young Tory has just tweeted:
Great to see Dominic Raab appointed Justice Minister. A brilliant mind and strong voice for civil liberties and classical liberalism.
For the record, Raab supported plain packaging. He also voted for a ban on smoking in private vehicles (carrying children).
Oh, and he failed to support an amendment to the smoking ban when the opportunity arose.
A strong voice for civil liberties and classical liberalism? Do me a favour!

There are undoubtedly some Conservative MPs who are libertarian or socially liberal on every other issue but take a firm line in support of more tobacco control measures. Often these are MPs who have had close family members die from smoking-related diseases. I have no idea if Mr Raab falls into this category but if so it would explain a lot. Having said this I can think of several MPs who have lost parents to lung cancer who still vote against tobacco control measures so I suppose it really depends on how much influence the individual MP places on their personal life when deciding how to vote. I would hope FOREST would not be too hard on MPs who have lost loved ones to smoking related diseases as it has to be factored into how people may vote.
I'm sorry, but I don't see how it matters a damn who is 'health minister', or any other minister. The thing is that the titles are themselves 'propaganda tools'. We have yet to unravel the confidence trick involved in the titles. For example, what has Hunt done about the NHS over the last five years? Not a lot, I think. What has he done about the failure of the WHO regarding Ebola? Nothing. What has he done? Erm... Battered people who enjoy tobacco. Jane Ellison is of no significance whatsoever. Only Hunt is responsible.
Borderline - I lost my mum who died of NHS neglect in hospital. Does that mean I should call for a ban on the NHS and expect everyone to agree with me because I lost a loved one as a direct result of it?
I'm very sorry for MPs who might have lost loved ones to what they believe is tobacco related illness but that doesn't give them the right to socially exclude and remove consumer rights of other people who make an informed adult decision smoke .
