What is the reason for not referring to Michael Gove as "Gove, Michael"? Not trying to protect him, are you?

Am I expected to take that comment seriously?

Are you sure that no whip was applied in Tory party inner circles? The only credible alternative explanation I can think of is that Osbourne et al are as thick as Cameron, which I find hard to believe. I do hope that our vacuous leader enjoys the idea of drinking champagne from bottles and glasses decorated with a State mandated diseased liver motif, because that is what he and his foolish cronies have just voted for. It should go down a treat with visiting dignitaries and help dispel any vestigial beliefs that the UK is a liberal tolerant society.

I would like to support my MP who voted against the measure but if I do so, I would also be supporting Cameron and his healthist pals, which is anathema to me.

Some of the names above disgust me. So much for David Cameron wanting to roll back the 'the nanny state'. I genuinely feel some of the above were pulled to one side and someone had a word with them, added to which, personally I feel Cameron does not want to win the next general election he's GUTLESS. And also the chancellor of the exchequer voted for plain packaging, AMAZING. Hopefully you never know, this could be rejected by the the House Of Lords on Monday. Believe me, the next eight weeks there will be hustings in the run up to the general election and in 95% of the contingencies there will be a hustings held on behalf of the small business federation, and about 30% of the attendees are newsagents, so sadly even the MP's who voted against this will come in for a lot of criticism.

You might want to register your disgust on Conservative home, who have a full list of those who voted against this ludricrous & stupid proposal.

Well at least it flushed out the hidden denormalisers, smiling to your face and plotting to make you even more of a social outcast behind your back.

I made a terrible mistake in 2010, I thought I'd voted for a Conservative.

My MP, Jake Berry is on there. He knows I never vote for him anyway though. We've had many emails back and forth about plain packs and minimum alcohol pricing as he supports both.

Letter sent to my MP who voted against but sadly that won't make me vote for him :

Dear Karl,

Thanks for your letter dated March 9. I do hope that you voted against this madness. However, your language in the letter - which I assume is a Govt template - is very concerning. For "Government backs the public health case for introducing the policy," please read instead the truth which is "The Govt backs the propaganda case for introducing the policy."

I am also very concerned when you say this is to "bring the prospect of "our" first smoke free generation one step closer" when really you mean criminalisation of consumers is brought one step closer and our children (they do not belong to your Govt) will have their whole lives and futures ruined thanks to this policy which will result in targeting them for sales by criminals and then criminalising them by Govt - the first generation to be attacked in this way since the Spanish Inquisition executed Rodrigo de Jerez - Europe's first smoker. I could not possibly vote for such a socially regressive Party and I do hope your Govt realises that March 9 was the day it lost the election.

People do not want Labour but Labour will win by default and, as as far as I am concerned, there is no difference between your party and Labour.

Incidentally, yes, I left Twitter because I could not put up with the bullying anymore. Of course bullying of legitimate adult consumers who use a product that your Govt dislikes are targets for such bullying to achieve the smoker free world. I am no longer a part of your society having been pushed out for no other reason than I began smoking as a very young child and I am now a granny who is not dead and won't quit.

I despise your Govt and your Govt friends in the Labour party for introducing fascism into the UK mainstream for the first time since the dark and awful days of 1930s Britain and Germany.

I hope you all lose. UKIP will get my vote because your Govt has given me no reason to vote for it and, frankly, I see no difference between what your party offers and what Labour offers - especially as this legislation is Labour inspired. They don't even need to win an election to get the laws they want via your Govt.

I doubt UKIP will win this time but your party will lose and hopefully after another dreadful five years of Labour the public will finally wake up - or your party, once bitten twice shy, will go back to being fair minded, business friendly and democracy loving Conservative again.

Thanks for your help in this matter over the last five years - much good that it did.

Best wishes,
Pat Nurse

Glad to hear, despite the fact that, if they win, we'll pick up the bill, that, if this gets through the Lords, BAT intends to sue.

It still has to get through the Lords. It ain't over 'till it's over.

The House of Lords have rejected barmy laws in the past. They are the last chance saloon now.

Thanks for the list, Simon. Retained for useful future reference! It includes my own MP (which was a foregone conclusion, sadly), so there's now absolutely zero chance that she gets my vote in May in this marginal seat. I'm hopeful that UKIP will be standing in my area - they did last time - so this is the final, deciding factor as to which box will get my cross.

I doubt that the Lords will overturn this ruling. By and large they seem to be as brainwashed by all the emotive propaganda as the Commons are. But who knows? Maybe they'll at least be a bit more savvy about the very real possibility of an expensive lawsuit and might just apply a bit of commonsense to this whole proposal. But I don't hold out much hope, to be honest.

Correct me if I'm wrong on this but I thought the lords lost their power of legislative veto some years ago. As I understand it they can only ask the commons to reconsider.

Just when I was getting my head around the prospect of voting Conservative for the first time in my life, they go and do something like this ...

Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at 15:44 | Unregistered CommenterRose

Thanks for the list, it's good to know how they all voted. My MP, Eric Pickles, has had a blasting from me via email. I told him how foolish the Conservatives are to bring in this legislation in the lead up to a general election and with so many of their voters defecting to UKIP, they will no doubt lose some of their marginal seats. This is complete insanity that will not work and you can be sure that the counterfeiters will always be one step ahead of them.

Well done all those who voted in favour of this legislation, you have just driven smoking into cult status which will attract even more young people to smoke. Smoke-free generation - dream on.
