Scotland: now Lib Dem wants ban on smoking in cars with children
Saturday, March 30, 2013 at 10:40
A Lib Dem politician has called for a ban on smoking in cars carrying children.
South of Scotland MSP Jim Hume will try to outlaw the practise via a private members bill.
How very liberal!
You can read my reaction - and the predictable response of ASH Scotland's Sheila Duffy - in today's Scottish Sun.
See: Should there be a ban on parents smoking in their cars?
Note: my response is based on a five-minute phone interview so some of my comments are paraphrased.

It doesn't matter what people want, it doesn't matter what kids think, it doesn't matter that the state doesn't own our kids, it doesn't matter that smoking in cars is evolving out naturally - the bullies will demand their way because it's not about health. It is about ideology and this is the next notch in the bedpost.
I can see stickers with No Kids Allowed going up in cars and then the bigots will find another weapon to use against adult consumers. It's not about kids either but forcing people to quit smoking step by step because these morons have no idea what "choice" means. They think it means "Do as we say or else."
There is nothing liberal about Hume. Like much of the rest of his party he is a socialist of the more authoritarian kind skulking behind an apparently benign disguise. Given a limited choice between him and Dennis Skinner I think that I would vote for Dennis on the grounds that at least he doesn't pretend to be something that he is not. I would vote for just about anybody at all who promised to publicly expose Duffy for exactly what she is.
