Wanted: a word for smokers and vapers
Thursday, November 21, 2013 at 16:27 I need a collective noun for people who smoke, vape and use other nicotine products.
Nicoteenies? Perhaps not. Suggestions welcome.

I like the sound of 'tokers'.
I saw the word 'smapers' bandied about in a Facebook alert very recently but can't find it now, don't know if they were being serious.

Well if I might be allowed to demonstrate just how kulturred I iz : "Nonromans"
cos some German poet (Goethe or Heine I think without googling) once wrote: " We are not Romans, we smoke tobacco (ie we are civilised)"

Smokers of electronic cigarettes have chosen to make the distinction by inventing the term 'vaping', but in the final analysis they are smoking a faux cigarette that mimics the attributes of tobacco smoking.
Why on earth would you want such a word?
I'm tempted to say "niccers"?
How about Smopers, or Vakers?

I quite like the idea of thinking about the 'desert rats'. If you recall, German propagandists called the British army in North Africa "rats", whence came the take-up of that word in an admirable sense by our troops.
I doubt that it would appeal to you, but, in that tradition, all smokers and vapers are 'Addicts'. Note that the troops were not described as just 'rats' - they were described as 'desert rats'. Thus, both smokers and vapers could be called "Nicotine Addicts". The phrase demands that TC 'proves' that there is anything wrong with that.
We are different so its difficult to find a word that describes us both as one.
Smokers smoke for the smoke and not the nicotine like vapers. I don't like nicotine consumers because that gives ammo to antis to label us addicts. I don't like nicophiles either (again implies we're hopeless addicts and we don't all smoke for nicotine) nor smapers which wipes out most of the reference to us as smokers and appears to want to clean up the word Smoker which I am not ashamed of.
I could live with Tokers if I had to - but it makes us sound as if we are all cannabis wreck heads (again implies addicts) but antis do love their hash if they hate tobacco.
How about just calling us all consumers like other consumers of legal products.
Crossbow is right. Stop denormalising us and putting us in boxes.
How about 'a Pleasure of Smokers/Vapers' as in a 'murder of crows'?

A Time of Pleasure
Since I refer to my pipe smoking as a pleasurable 'pastime', which would also include vaping, cigarette smoking, and of course cigar smoking - then I would refer to myself as a 'pastimer'.
Pastiming could also include any number of pastimes too like knitting, clockmaking or perhaps clay-modelling.
In fact anything that you consider to be a pleasurable 'pastime' would mean you’re a ‘pastimer’
I’d like to see Arnott et al mess around with that one.
After much head scratching I've decided this idea is knickers.
Dear God, why don't we have an post requesting designs for a patch to sew on everyone's arms? lt's bad enough the anti-smoking brigade thinking up names for us but to do it to ourselves??? Pure insanity!
BTW, has Forest now become the Freedom Organisation for The Right to Enjoy Smoking and Vaping (especially as Big T is moving into the E Cig market) - FORESTAV???
I think Vapers have plenty of friends including sanctimonious politicians who hate us and would use E-cigs to force us to quit. Please don't forget that we little unfunded tobacco consumers need all the support we can get to stand our ground and not be forced onto E-Cigs or any other quitting method.

I started using the word "puffers". It certainly includes both, but is open to unfortunate mis-statements.
A collective noun for those who enjoy tobacco in its various forms is not necessary nor is one wanted.
I will not be pigeon-holed because of one facet of my multitudinous behaviours. That I smoke is completely incidental to who I am. You either accept me for who and what I am or you don't.

In the spirit og the thing, we could also refer to the 'tobacco directives' as 'Nictats.'
Pat Nurse and Smoking Hot sum this up quite adequately - we "smokers" do not need another name - we "smoke" tobacco because we enjoy the taste and the beautiful aroma of the burning leaf - not because we are some sort of junkie, who will suck on anything in order to get our fix.
So called "vapers" like to distance themselves from real "smokers" and run down people who smoke, saying their product is safe and the real thing "smoking" is dangerous - with this in mind I for one, do not wish to be associated with "vapers" in any way.
We're humans! Nothing more... nothing less!
