George Monbiot: professional trouble-maker, silly little man, or both?

Calling yourself a "professional trouble-maker" is a pretty desperate way to sell yourself.

Either that or it's a cry for help.

George Monbiot has been around for many years. He used to work for the BBC. Now he writes for the Guardian.

His name was familiar but until yesterday I had never thought to read anything he has written. (Self-proclaimed "professional trouble-makers" are a bit of a turn-off, if you ask me.)

Anyway, someone mentioned that he had tweeted about Forest's Freedom Dinner featuring James Delingpole, General Sir Mike Jackson and 150 libertarian-minded guests.

Linking to our video of the event, Monbiot tweeted:

Could this be the world's densest concentration of creeps, frauds, LM cultists and astroturfers?

Er, no, but thanks for the plug, George. Now run along, you silly little man.

Note: "LM cultists" refers (I think) to supporters of the defunct Living Marxism magazine whose non-conformist libertarianism lives on in the guise of Spiked and the Institute of Ideas.

Speakers at The Freedom Dinner included Claire Fox (Institute of Ideas) while guests included Dave Bowden and Dolan Cummings (Institute of Ideas), and Rob Lyons and Patrick Hayes (Spiked).

Clare and Patrick are both featured in the video, hence Monbiot's comment.

Monbiot once called members of the Association of British Drivers - so by implication me - anti-social bastards, which I bear as a badge of honour.

But it's interesting how recently he has become a convert to nuclear power, thus drawing the opprobrium of many Greenies, and has also admitted that Peak Oil just isn't happening.

George Moonbat as he is disparagingly referred to sometimes is an AGW climate fundamentalist and he and James Dellingpole have been at each others throats for years.

Here is James and George on the BBC discussing climate change with the presenter saying "I was told I would need a cattle prod to keep you two apart."

I tweeted my disagreement to Monbiot on a smoking matter and he blocked me, like Professor Simon Chapman.

I'm pretty much the last person to have anything much good to say about Crown Forces..but I fail to see how anyone could describe the guest speakers and especially Gen.Mike Jackson as any of the above. Cultist?!? Fraud?!?!

Thanks for explaining "LM" cos I wouldn't have had a clue wtf he ,Monbiot, was on about...not that he knew either.

I agree. Monbiot is complete creep. I looked for a tweet of his to include in my last blog post but couldn't find it. P'rhaps he realised that it made him look a complete idiot and deleted it.

He said Alec - the US lobby group warning the UK Govt that it has no right to thieve legitimate business trademarks to hand them to direct competitors in the Tobacco Control industry - should keep its "nose out of our business" which I found quite immature and ridiculous given that the Aussie branch of the TCI is doing exactly that - sticking its nose into our business to force our Govt to make a law that it wants to see in the UK. Monbiot of course said nothing about this interference in our business from a powerful foreign industry because he supports that industry.

Monbiot is a typical smokerphobic. A closed minded selfish and bigoted liar, a cheat, and an abuser. What on earth is our media doing in giving such bran-dead people a voice when all they do is promote hate?
