Michael Gove for PM!

I've been out all day but I had to mention this.

Last year, on the subject of Rupert Murdoch, I wrote:

If there's one thing we should never forget it's this: in the Eighties Rupert Murdoch helped destroy the power of the print unions. For that, he has my undying thanks and admiration.

I'm delighted that Michael Gove shares my high opinion of the News Corp chairman. Speaking at the Leveson Inquiry today the Education Secretary declared that Murdoch is "one of the most impressive and significant figures of the last 50 years".

His former boss, added Gove, is a "force of nature, a phenomenon, a great man".

What stood out for me, though, was Gove's comment that:

"Before the case for regulation is made, there is a case for liberty as well ... I am unashamedly on the side of those who say we should think very carefully about regulation."

The Education Secretary was talking about press freedom but I'd like to think it sums up his political philosophy.

Michael Gove for prime minister, anyone?

No. Unless he comes out on the side of smokers. I often find these politicians mean liberty except when it comes to smokers. If he had mentioned us specifically, or even fought for our right to be included in the scam libDem Freedom Bill I might think differently but he hasn't shown his true colours on that issue yet enough for me to think about supporting him.

Michael Gove did vote against the smoking ban in February 2006. Pat, you are right about the Lib-Dem freedom bill, a party who's not Liberal nor democratic.

I've been impressed since watching him regularly on BBC's 'Head to Head', years ago, when he was up against the likes of Polly Toynbee.

He's a libertarian but we'd have to see how he stood up against our 'treaty obligations' and the DoH stamping it's foot.

I'd be optimistic at the moment.

It would take a lot more than that for me to trust anything a main stream MP says these days, they all speak with forked tongue!
