Entering into the Olympic spirit

My tickets for the Olympics have just arrived.

I can't fault the efficiency with which they have been delivered. Yesterday, for example, I received an email advising me that:

Royal Mail has received your item from LONDON 2012. Your item is now ready for delivery and we will attempt to deliver it today subject to any alternative instructions that you have previously agreed with us.

This is unheard of. Have you ever received advance notice of delivery from Royal Mail?

Seconds after they were delivered I received another email:

Dear Customer, Your item from LONDON 2012 has now been delivered by Royal Mail.

I know, I've just signed for it!! But thanks, anyway.

As you may recall, I applied for £800 worth of tickets many moons ago. I can't remember exactly what I went for (it was very late at night and the London 2012 website kept crashing) but I know it included rowing, show jumping and something else.

In the event I failed to get anything apart from "something else" – two tickets for the boxing: South Arena 2, ExCel, Session BX001, July 28, 13:30hrs.

That's it.

Anyway, the tickets have arrived in a neat little wallet with two Olympic Games travel cards and an Official Spectator Guide that tells me how to get to the Excel and offers the following "Top tips":

  • Remember your tickets
  • Be prepared to wait
  • Check the weather forecast

Oh, and there's a "wide range of healthy and tasty food inside the venue".

That's the spirit.

Seen on the overhead motorway gantry near Gateshead:

"For Olympic events, plan your journey, arrive in good time"

I believe that they've been spotted the length and breadth...

It never stops, does it

Hold on...The Head of FOREST and self announced 'Voice Of The Smoker' is not only attending, but attending to almost the tune of a month's wages for many mere mortals, the Olympics that imposed a Communist style smoking Verbot in all ticketed areas (and before you have a Godwin's Law style grizzle about my use of 'communist' remember that's exactly what the Chinese did)?

While I don't 'get' FOREST's reason for not calling for a general boycott , let alone Direct Action, of the Games themselves I do understand some might think such a boycott counterproductive but Simon, hand on heart, what message is your attending the 'pics sending to Smokers and the AntiSmoking Industry alike.

Apparently seven out of ten athletes at the 2008 Peking olympic Games enjoyed a ciggie
they seem to have set a few records though !
